I use to avoid the huge bags of chips at the warehouse stores because the one time I bought them, almost a third of the bag went stale before we could eat them all. Wasting food is no savings. And yes, I know you can re-crisp chips by heating them in the oven for a bit, but I was not going to do that every time we ate chips.
Besides, the savings wasn’t that great.
Until I read about GMO’s (genetically modified organisims) and how most non-organic corn products were made with GMO corn. As a gardener and a Christian, I just find myself on the side firmly against GMO products (though it seems we are up against some pretty big players…)- even without “proof” of how they might affect our bodies.
And that’s when I realized those huge bags of organic chips were a big savings and I better come up with a way to use them.
When you are ready to use some of the chips, open the bag and immediately pour 1/3 into a gallon zipper baggie (a thick freezer one works best- less chance of the corners poking holes in them), and repeat with another 1/3 of the large bag. The last third stays in the original bag and becomes your first “bag” of chips.
Remove as much air as you can from the two zipper baggies (I like to suck out the air with a straw I keep in my baggie drawer just for this purpose- you’ll be amazed at how this really works!) and place in your pantry. Use them as you would smaller bags of chips.
We’ve had these bags in our pantry for weeks and they’ve never been stale when we’ve opened them up- they are just as crisp as the day I bagged them up (which actually shocked me at first- I thought the last bag would maybe be a bit stale…).
So now I spend a few minutes bagging up the chips we won’t use right away and save big on organic chips.
How big? When split, I get three 13-1/3 oz. bags for $1.53 each (this is the Kirkland brand at Costco). If I’m lucky to have a coupon for sale organic chips, I might be able to get a bag for about $1.50 to $2.00. But that bag is typically only 8 oz. (and sometimes only 6 oz.!) so that big warehouse bag really is a nice savings.
