Happy weekend! We’re firmly in the grips of January weather here (ice last week, 19 degrees this week – 2 hrs north in Portland they have record snow) and I know many of you are, too. How do you deal with it – curl up and read? Bundle up and walk/ski? Wish it would end soon?
I waver between all of these, but do try to use this time to get things done or try new indoor things. New cooking techniques, new recipes, planning out a new garden (definitely a dream this year without ground to plant one yet, ha!). What new thing are you trying or planning?
On to this week’s things I’m loving – and a few links I think you’ll love! (as always, some of the links I provide are affiliate links)
New business cards. Aren’t these just perfect? My daughter designed them and I think she perfectly caught the classic, simple vibe I always try to project. I did have some cards I made years ago with a pre-made template, but since I haven’t gone to conferences I haven’t needed them since.
Well, with a new goal to overcome my fear of conferences (like in this week, eek!!) new biz cards were called for. Unfortunately, I didn’t remember soon enough and had to pay $20 shipping to get them delivered in time. #bloggerfail Good thing I love them!
The scary house we were almost tempted to buy. Okay, so I just had to share this with you all – a property popped up on Zillow this last week that was priced really low and in a great area like we’re looking for (rural, but 15 minutes from town). We took a look that day and the location was really nice and the drive there beautiful.
BUT the house was beyond repair – literally. Crumbling foundation, windows without glass, roof in disrepair, and that weird stone facade. The land dropped down about 6 feet right behind the house (like 4 feet from the house) so there wouldn’t be a lot of room to build a house and garage.
This is where it helps to have goals to focus us. In the heat of a good price and active market (a car pulled in after us to look at it), it’s easy to jump before really thinking it through. Our goal is lower mortgage, yes, but also lower maintenance and this uneven, marshy land didn’t fit the goal – or the fact that you’d really need a deck (lots of maintenance) and an upstairs (not the goals as we look to for a place we can live in for years).
We didn’t go for it and of course it had a bid within a day – but the more I think about it, the more I’m glad we didn’t take that on! With house and foundation removal, retaining walls needed, and years of non-maintenance of well and septic, it seemed like a potential money pit, too. So the search continues!
My cute new external battery charger for my phone. Did I mention I was traveling to a conference this week? (yikes – right about now I’m wondering why I signed up!) Since I’ll be using my phone and computer while traveling and at the conference, I wanted to have an external battery available for my phone at least. This lipstick-sized charger from Anker has great reviews on Amazon and was priced right, so I ordered it. It came with a nice little fabric case, too, that can hold the charger, cable, and instructions all together.
I guess there’s no reason not to go now, lol.
