Fall gardening tips and inspirational tours

Do you long for a garden that looks something other than brown and dead come September? Do you wish you could harvest food from your vegetable patch into November and maybe beyond? Or that your containers looked good until the holidays?

You are not alone! It always seems easy in the spring to get the yard, containers and gardens cleaned and ready for the coming season. Maybe it’s because we’ve been cooped up all winter and can’t wait to get our hands dirty and transform our outdoor spaces. It’s also pretty easy to find things in stores and garden centers to inspire and motivate us.

But fall? I confess to being a bit tired – I’m watering and trying to keep up with the produce that’s ripening by cooking, canning, and freezing. It’s hard to think of what I can do to make my outdoor areas just as pretty in the fall months as the spring when I feel like I’m just keeping up.

And let’s face it – the stores and magazines (and even Pinterest) don’t help with their emphasis on back-to-school, halloween and even Christmas (yep, in August- I saw a couple shelves already decked out in a not-to-be-named store).

So I thought I would search out some fall gardening inspiration from some of my favorite sites to help us realize that with just a bit of planning (and only what you’d like to do), you can harvest later, enjoy beautiful flowers and have outdoor spaces you want to hang out in well into the cooler months.

You’ll find something for all areas here – beautiful fall garden tours, fall gardening tips, ideas for vegetables to plant, and sweet containers that will make you and your visitors smile.

  1. I really enjoyed reading all of your helpful fall gardening tips. I need to start planning for my fall garden tasks, so thank you for the reminder! I never look forward to that, by the way. It’s necessary, and I’m always so thankful come spring! Very inspirational, and now I have some planning to do.

  2. I agree fall gardening is harder to get motivated to do. Right now I’m trying to keep up with my green beans and get them canned. But I would like to get in a few things for a fall garden this year.

  3. What a nice roundup. Full of some great bloggers and inspiring tips. I agree that come fall it can be hard to focus on the garden but on the bright side it’s usually great weather. If I can only stay home and take care of the garden instead of going out to enjoy all of the great fall harvest activities around. We do have a couple of big outdoor projects on the list this year, so fingers crossed that we will actually get them done.
