Podcast Ep. 29: More on the Farmhouse Yard & Garden Plans

After creating two yard and garden designs from scratch we've learned a few things that work for us - and some that don't. We've already got some ideas for the farmhouse property that we're talking about in this episode. Our first city garden became too small. Our next country garden was too big. So this one is going to be just right - for us. Exactly like Goldilocks. We discuss sunlight, deer, raised beds, paths and other things to think about. And since it's all about the garden, I picked some great garden-to-table recipes to share. And our cool things segment features an item that's a whole lot cheaper now than when I bought it.

You can download this episode from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and TuneIn Radio – or listen to it below right on your computer! Then use this page to check out any links, notes, or photos we talked about in the episode. Note: If you’re reading in a feed reader, you might have to click through to the post to see the player.

    Farmhouse Yard & Garden Plans

    Garden Tour-back border

See the big brown fence and neighbor's rotting 1970s RV here? Nope - that would be why I planted all the plants you see - none of it was here when we moved in 12 years previously. This covering up of unsightly views is really what drove a lot of the backyard plan at our cottage property.

We're super happy to not have that issue with the farmhouse's yard:

    Farmhouse porch view into yard

Which is pretty nice since the house itself needs so much work! Our outside plans then will focus on our own needs and wants and will include:

    front yard porch plan details

    • Simple front porch plantings.
    • An herb and flower garden that will connect the front and side door walkways.
    • A vegetable garden plan that I outlined here.

And of course a lot more mowing, ha! And dealing with gophers.

    What's Cooking

An easy grilled salad with Thai flavors ready in 30 minutes

    Garden-to-table recipes:

    • Garden To Table: Thai Grilled Pork and Vegetable Salad with Spicy Peanut Dressing
    • Greek Style Pasta Salad with Green Beans & Tomatoes
    • Three Pea Salad with Feta & Walnuts
    • Chicken Lime Lettuce Wraps {10 Minute Meal!}

    This is Really Cool!

    Seedling heat mat

Jami: Seedling heat mat - the price has come down SO much in the last 10 years, I can't believe it!

Brian: Zoom Web Conferencing - it's not just for work.

Lots of deer here but even though I have an old mophead hydrangea at the front (NE) corner of the house, I've never noticed them bother it. (Watch that change this year....) Also, when you were talking about your herb/flower garden, it made me think of the herb garden (I think it's a Shakespearean herb garden?) at the Huntington Library in San Marino CA (just next to Pasadena). I know they're an entirely different growing area, but I couldn't resist adding this link. huntington.org/WebAssets/Templates/content.aspx?id=506

Oh, thank you Beth - I am encouraged about the hydrangea and inspired by that garden link!
