Podcast Ep. 7: Moles, Voles, Reader Mole Remedies & Fermenting

Listen for a story of a field mouse (aka, vole) funeral gone wrong and a surprising pitchfork-in-the-garden story. Then we talk about how to thwart voles in raised beds and all 9 (or 10?) methods we've tried to get rid of moles. And if you're looking for mole remedies, we've got a LOT from AOC's newsletter readers- including the one we'll be trying next. In the food segment, we talk about fermenting food - what it is and what it's NOT - and why it's now a family favorite. And check out our "This is Really Cool" section for, well, really cool stuff.

Our history with moles and voles in the garden, the many mole remedies blog readers sent in and which we'll try, plus how we discovered easy fermenting.

**NEW** If you have any questions for us or ideas for the podcast, you can leave us a voicemail!! Dial (541) 658-0215, leave your question/idea and we may play it on the podcast - and do our best to answer.

You can download this episode from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and TuneIn Radio – or listen to it below right on your computer! Then use this page to check out any links, notes, or photos we talked about in the episode. Note: If you’re reading in a feed reader, you might have to click through to the post to see the player.

    Moles, Voles, & Mole Remedies

Mole remedies-Mole damage in raised bed garden

This is the video we made where we attempted to keep the voles (aka, field mice - they're the same) from eating our root vegetables in raised beds (fyi: it worked for the beds…but didn't really stop mole damage):

    The Project

Mole remedies-Front flower garden mole damage

Jami's mom’s flower garden makeover to control weeds and make low-maintenance included cardboard and free wood/debris chips which we started in the spring.

The mole remedies from AOC newsletter readers included solar sonic stakes, dog poop in the runs (? yep!), lots of various uses for castor oil, specific traps, and gum. Which have you used?

    What's Cooking

    Fermented pickled vegetables-pouring salt water

Jami started researching gut health and it's link to so many health issues (plus just plain discomfort!) last year and wrote about it in this article. Making easy ferments a regular part of our meals became a goal out of this, and as I mentioned, these Easy Fermenter Lids are what made it a real possibility.

We now have fermented foods in our fridge most of the time, including these two favorites you can find on the blog:

    • Easiest Fermented Pickled Vegetables Ever
    • 5-Minute Foolproof Fermented Corn Relish Recipe

Our other favorites are a mild sauerkraut and a spicy, non-authentic (read: no fish sauce/seafood powder) kimchi, which you should see on the blog soon!

    This is Really Cool!

Brian's pick: the hilarious 1980s Dr. Who movie he saw with live comedy commentary through Fathom Events Rifftracks (click to see the upcoming movies they will be doing).

Jami's pick: the Homecoming podcast (warning: while this old-time radio drama is SO good, there are a few F-bombs, sadly - seems you can't get away from that these days...)

Fall Floral Phone Wallpapers-rudbedkia, aster, and anemone

These are the floral phone wallpapers (these are also available as 8x10 printables for easy decor) our daughter designed from my photos. You can find them free in the subscriber library when you sign up for the weekly newsletter. The VIP library is full of useful downloadable files for you and will be added to regularly - sign up here to be in-the-know.

Thanks for listening! If you like this podcast, you can really help us out by telling your friends, subscribing on iTunes, and leaving us a review – that’s how other’s will find us too!

Well, in the first paragraph of that article it states:
"[Voles} are sometimes known as meadow mice or field mice in North America and Australia." 🙂 🙂
