Quick & Cute Pom Pom Flowers For Spring

Hey there, friends! Since it’s the winter doldrums, I was looking for a fun project that could be done quickly, bring some color to our January white dining room, and make me smile.

I think these pom pom flowers fit the bill, don’t you?

I love seeing them lined up on our dining table. They’re so cheery – just the thing to help bring a little spring to the depths of winter.

Who needs to pay for flowers when you can make your own Dr. Seussian bouquet that lasts as long as you want?

But of course you can’t be too surprised about the whole pom pom angle since I did make this Anthropologie knock-off wreath and garland not long ago. And I love them so much, I figured out a way to keep them up after the holidays.

Then, with my fancy DIY pom pom maker (no awkward fork for me!) burning a hole in my craft closet, I remembered seeing pom pom flowers last year in a Country Living magazine.

Since I always have yarn hanging around (a-hem…not quite a hoarder – yet), I picked my favorite colors and got to work.

About 15 minutes later, I had an everlasting ‘flower’ arrangement!

How to make pom pom flowers:

1. Choose 3-5 colors of yarn and make pom poms in three different sizes, varying the colors as you like (go here to see how to make your own quick and easy pom pom maker and how to make the pom poms – use less yarn to make looser, mum-like poms and more yarn for traditional trimmed round poms).
2. Wander outside and find some lovely dead plants that you can harvest the stems from. I used stems from last summer’s basil plants. Ha- good thing I hadn’t cleaned up the herb garden yet!
3. Trim the stems as needed and fit them into 3 or 5 (odd numbers look best) small bottles or vases. Decide the best placement of the different sizes and colors of pom poms. I chose to use the same color for the stems I attached two pom poms to – you know, to keep it realistic…cough.
4. Add a dab of hot glue to the tips and attach the pom poms to the ends.

See what I mean? It’s the perfect little craft if you want to add a bit of brightness to your world.

I also sewed a simple little table runner since my other runners were white or tan. No way I was going to dull down these babies with a boring runner.

I found this fabric in the stash I’m trying to organize and I was like, “wow, this is perfect – it matches the green and everything. Wonder if it will work in the dining room?”

And when I put it on the table, I looked down and realized it is the fabric I covered our $5 chairs with.

Um, yeah, I think it will work.

My daughter said the same thing I was thinking when she came home from school and saw them – that they just make you smile.

Well, after she likened them to something from a Dr. Seuss book, that is.

Spring Table Idea with DIY Pom-Pom Flowers:

Since I was going for a clean and simple, though bright look, I chose not to compete with the centerpiece by using the textured basket weave thrift store chargers I used at Thanksgiving, white napkins, and our everyday white plates. 

Oh, some have asked for the name of our plates – they are vintage Pope Gosser ‘Rose Point’ plates and I get them on ebay. And I LOVE them.

I used a roll of brown cardboard edging that I had bought for making valances years ago and decided to stamp our names on it and tape them around ramekins as place cards. I could reuse them as napkin rings, too, I think.
