Podcast Ep. 10: The One About Easy Homemade Bread
We both love easy homemade bread and of course we have a few stories about it. Brian tells about the time his Mom decided to go all-out for natural bread making, including a 1,500 mile trip and grinding the wheat herself. Jami recalls how she got interested in making her own bread and all the mistakes she made as she tried to get the best artisan loaf with the easiest steps. She also tells you about the ONE countertop appliance you should have if you want to make your own easy bread. Plus, our cool things this week include a great set of blue-tooth earbuds and a “brand-less” way to order great quality food.

This is artisan bread we make regularly, the one that’s been a popular recipe from the blog for years (and earned that 1st-page Google result).
Another recipe that is actually ranked higher on Google’s results page for a sourdough artisan bread (#3) is my easy sourdough artisan recipe that makes a fantastic loaf with your starter.
Both of these artisan bread recipes are baked in an enameled cast iron pot like we talked about. This one on Amazon is similar to the 6-qt. pot we have.
Does success always come from failure? Maybe – look here to see my first attempt at sourdough artisan bread (using a different recipe). We laughed and laughed at those (and you’ve just got to, right?).
Making Bread

And this is the sandwich bread that freed me from having to buy bread at the store. It might’ve take awhile to get there, but the result was worth it – a soft bread everyone loved that I could easily fit making weekly into our schedule.
The kitchen appliance that truly makes easy homemade bread a reality for me – a Kitchenaid mixer. The one pictured here is theĀ KitchenAid Professional 600 (6qt)Ā and the model I use now is a KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus. Both are models I recommend for people wanting to make heavy bread doughs like 100% whole wheat and sourdough.
You can see some of my other baking must-haves (or simply like-to-haves) here.
What’s Cooking
Bread, of course! Here are links to the other recipes we talked about so you can make your own easy homemade bread:
- Soft, 100% Whole Wheat Rolls (another SUPER popular recipe that you will love)
- Quick & Soft Hamburger Buns or Breadsticks
- Fluffy 100% Whole Wheat Biscuits
- Simple French Baguettes (mixed in a food processor!)
This is Really Cool!
Brian’s cool for this week: Tao Tronics Bluetooth Earbuds allow him to listen to podcasts while chopping wood, doing dishes, and riding the mower.

Jami’s is Brandless.com where you can find organic & natural foods, kitchen items, and beauty for $3 each (or less!). The quality so far has been great (minus the odd non-scented smell of the facial moisturizer..) and I love how easy it is. I can see myself ordering monthly for our favorite items.
