In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a fan of food mixes in jars. Whether it’s a soup mix, a muffin mix, a bread mix, pancake mix or cookie mix, it doesn’t matter – I’m up for both giving and receiving a fun new food to try!
I love that they are inexpensive and that it doesn’t add to the stuff people have, but still lets them know you have been thinking of them.
I’ve also found it’s a great way to give food that can be made on the recipient’s time frame – and doesn’t need to be consumed right away.
Which is perfect around the holidays when sweet food gifts are flowing in abundance. But what about in February when the gray, cold days just calls for a homemade bread or treat?
A jar full of ingredients that are easily paired with pantry staples in the answer!
And this jar of triple chocolate peppermint cookies is JUST the thing to bring anyone out of the doldrums. Moist, chewy and packed full of chunks of two different chocolates (the cocoa powder is the third chocolate), M&Ms, and peppermint pieces, they are the perfect antidote to the after holiday slump or cold winter days.
Ingredients for Jars
Detailed quantities and instructions for the mix are included in the full recipe box below, but here are a few extra tips for making and printing the tags.

Here’s what you’ll need to make the chocolate peppermint cookie mix with some variations and notes on the ingredients:
- Quart size jar with lid – wide mouth jars are best able to fit all the ingredients.
- Flour – I’ve created this to be used with whole wheat pastry flour, but you can also use regular unbleached flour (all-purpose).
- Salt and baking powder
- Cocoa powder – I’ve used both regular cocoa powder and a mix of regular and dutch process.
- Brown sugar – I’ve not made these with any other type of sugar, though I’m sure regular cane sugar would be okay. I like the flavor depth that brown sugar gives to chocolate cookies.
- White chocolate – choose either chopped pieces from a bar or chips, but do make sure they are a quality white chocolate with cocoa butter as one of the first ingredients.
- M&M candies – these are optional but if gifting at the holidays they are a fun addition. If not using, simply add more white chocolate or chocolate chips to fill the jar.
- Chocolate chips – use either semisweet or dark chocolate chips.
- Crushed peppermint candies – I buy a bag of crushed peppermint candy every season for recipes like this, but of course you can buy candy canes and crush them yourself.
- Large funnel (I use a canning funnel, which I use all the time for things like this, not just for canning!)
- Ribbon or twine and scissors
- Printed instruction tags (below)
Directions for Making Jar
Layer the ingredients in a quart mason jar in the order listed in the recipe card below.
TIP: To make it all fit with neat lines, tamp the jar down on the counter (or wood cutting board if your counter is hard like quartz) after each layer to compress the ingredients.
Attach a lid to seal the mix in the jar and print out the tags I’ve created for you below and attach one to the jar with ribbon or twine.

How to Print & Cut Out Tags
- There will be two pages, the cookie name on front and the baking directions on the back – print back to back on a colored printer to get the green paper tag color.
- Use a heavyweight paper or light cardstock for best results.
- You may notice that the front and back tags don’t match up exactly (a-hem), but it doesn’t matter after cutting. Cut from the front side first along the lines and then trim any white you see on the back after cutting out. It all works out!
- Use a hole punch on the white circle for the tag hole – it should match up perfectly.

Just in case you’re wondering how the mix turns out – they’re really yummy with so many chunks of chocolatey goodness with just the right amount of peppermint.
Cookie Mix FAQs
Cookie mixes with a rising agent like baking powder or soda generally last 2-3 months, and because of the peppermint pieces this mix is best used within two months for optimal flavor.
Sure! You can make this mix your own by adding whatever chopped candy you’d like. Feel free to leave out the peppermint pieces, if you’d like (though you’ll need to make your own tag to reflect your changes).
This particular mix costs a bit more than mixes without the different chocolates and candies, coming in at $5-$6, depending on the sales you find.
Ideas for Gifting
You can of course give this on it’s own, but if you’d like to pair it with something, here are some ideas:
- Wooden spoon and tea towel.
- Coffee, tea, or other drink.
- A container of baked cookies so they can taste test what their jar will be like (a glass and bamboo container like this would be so useful!).
- A basket (like these kraft paper gift baskets) to hold the jar and anything else you’d like to add.
- Package with another jar cookie: Oat & Whole Wheat Snickerdoodle Cookie Mix, Cranberry White Chocolate Cookie Mix, or a main dish for a “meal basket:” Easy Lentil Barley Soup Mix or Red Beans And Rice Gift In A Jar.

This year, The Sweetest Season is raising money for Cookies 4 Kids’ Cancer, which is a recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to funding research for new, innovative and less-toxic treatments for childhood cancer.
Help us raise money for this important cause through our fundraising page.
Another exciting thing is that Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is in a matching window with their friends at OXO, meaning OXO will be matching every dollar raised through the end of 2025, up to $100,000. Whatever money we raise will automatically double on our fundraising page!
